Grandparents and Goldfish

This (Saturday) afternoon we walked to a small garden area on campus. Hadassah loves going there, as there are goldfish in water that she can splash in. :)

Finally, on the 7th try, we got a picture of Hadassah with them looking at the camera. She's not too keen on posing for long these days - too much to see and do!

Doing what she loves...

Pausing in play

Her little hands. Already so much bigger than they were. But still with baby dimples...

Hadassah is now so used to holding their hands, she initiated holding Grammy's hand on the way home, even though she was riding in the stroller!

Snapshots of a week

Catching up on pictures from the week..

On Monday we rode the subway to meet some friends for dinner. Hadassah loved playing with her grandparents on the 45-minute ride.

The looks she gives them are precious!

We were thrilled to meet our friends out for dinner! With children and living far apart, we don't get together as often as we'd like, so Ryan's parents, who had met them when they visited China with Ryan in 2011, provided the perfect excuse. :)

On Tuesday our neighbors had us over for lunch: more amazing dumplings! They even showed us how to make them, and were such gracious hosts. We ended up staying for over 2 hours of great conversation!

Our first try at ponytails on Wednesday didn't last long, but was super cute!

A co-worker of Ryan's and his sweet wife joined us for lunch on Thursday

Another attempt at pony tails... only to be pulled out minutes later by the curious little miss ;)

Hadassah LOVES playing with her Daddy! He comes up with games like this one, where he pretended to be asleep, then she'd touch his face, and he'd open his eyes with a crazy expression. She giggles and squeals for more!

We'll be in for a rude awakening when the grandparents leave... Hadassah is so enjoying all of the people to play with her while Mommy cooks, and I am so blessed by extra hands doing the dishes and fixing things!

On Friday another friend Ryan and his parents had met when they visited China in 2011 came 2 hours by train to stay with us. It was fun hosting another person overnight (we really enjoy hospitality!) though it involved more rearranging of beds and couches and blankets and curtains. So worth it though! :)

Grandparents and the Huangpu River

Gotten tired of pictures from the park by the Huangpu River yet? But with the grandparents here, it's a place they had to visit. :) And we're always amazed as we always find something new to see every time we go - and this was our 5th or 6th time there! Plus, with the beautiful weather and blue skies this fall is giving us, it was so fun to be out.
Hadassah is enjoying extra hands to hold wherever she goes :)

She wasn't quite in the mood for pictures - she wanted to get down so she could get some energy out!
There - much happier!
Precious.
She loves to fly!
Dancing in the rocks :)
Beauty displayed...
Beauty with the beauty :)
Hard not to take advantage of the natural gorgeous background...

She would run up and down the bridge all day if we only had as much energy as she does...
A family silhouette :)
So enjoying being together.
Again leaving at the perfect time....
This time we couldn't go on our e-bike, as we couldn't fit everyone on! A taxi got us there, but there were no taxis hanging around when we came out of the park. A guard directed us down the road to a bus stop, and right when Ryan was saying how at least a bus would take us to where taxi are even if it didn't take us home, an empty taxi drove by and he ran out to hail it. The driver screeched to a stop and we were home in no time. God provides. :)

Date Night

With grandparents here, we actually got to go on a date night. First time in over 5 months that we've had dinner out just the two of us. It's so amazing to spend time with my best friend...

God gave us so many gifts, too. It was a perfect night. We "just happened" to be at the right spot to see the blood moon lunar eclipse. And Hadassah did amazing for being 2 1/2 hours without us! So thankful.

Grandparents come!

We were thrilled to welcome Ryan's parents on Sunday afternoon! Ryan met them at the airport after church while I took Hadassah home to get a nap, figuring a rested grandchild was better than one there the moment they got off of the plane. ;)

Hadassah was still sleeping when they arrived, and woke up cranky so I nursed her before bringing out to see her visitors. She walked out, stopped at the site of Grammy, almost went to her, then got shy and snuggled with me for quite a few minutes!

 Starting to warm up...

She looked at her rather strangely, as if surprised that Grammy had legs, since we only see their faces on skype!

Playing toys with Grammy made her get over her shyness quickly. She soon learned what fun it is to have extra people to play with!

Then Granddaddy joined us. Hadassah just laid their and looked at him with the strangest expression for a while, as if "Do I know you?"

But by the end of the night, Hadassah was walking to both of them joyfully. We all love having them here! Ten days will go by too quickly...

My First Baking Class

My sister Miriam taught me to bake when I was little. My first batch of cookies made alone at age 8 not even the dog would eat, as I confused a tablespoon with a teaspoon. ;) But while I am by no means a gourmet baker, making bread and other goodies soon became a favorite of mine, especially if I was making them for others.

So while we get yummy Chinese food from our neighbors - they often bring over some of what they have for dinner! - I share baked things with them, since they're harder to come by in a land where most people don't have ovens. Our neighbor has a small oven, though, and she asked for the recipe of a cake I made her for her birthday. She made it, posted a picture on a social media site, and her friends asked where she learned to make it. When she said it was from me, they asked if I would do a class to teach them.

So on Saturday afternoon, I lugged a box of supplies over to the community building in our apartment complex. I was a little nervous, and my hands shook at first as I started mixing up the cake. But asking everyone to tell me their name at the beginning helped break the ice, especially when one man just held out his name bag - written in Chinese - which made me shrug in a "I have no clue" way and everyone laughed. :)

My neighbor did an amazing job translating as I demonstrated the steps, and she took these pictures for me. One of the ladies brought along ingredients to make the cake too.

I thought it was going to just be a small gathering of moms, but quite a few of all ages came out! It was a fun group.

As the cake was baking, I showed how to make frosting, and then pulled out cupcakes I'd made that morning. I figured if they tasted it, they'd be more likely to make it later themselves!

The kids especially had a fun time meticulously icing theirs, and 20 cupcakes disappeared fast and "Hěn hào chī" (very good to eat) was said quite a few times. Our family's favorite birthday cake of chocolate oatmeal has now gone global!

As the cake was still cooking, I demonstrated how to make banana bread, something that was very easy to find all of the ingredients for. I'd also made a loaf that morning, and it was somewhat dramatic when I poured the batter I'd just mixed in a bowl, and then uncovered the loaf I'd baked. They all clapped. :)

The pieces of bread disappeared in a flash with some coming back for seconds, so it was a hit!

The preparation, occupying most of the morning and some the previous week, confirmed to me why I'm not taking on teaching right now, as I don't like outside things diverting my time and energy from my family and responsibilities at home. My neighbors offered to find me a job at a school teaching ballet, but that season has passed for me. But this, as a rare occurance, was fun. Ryan took care of Hadassah more that day, and it was fun to share something I enjoy with people that didn't have much experience with it.

It was also really fun to be able to bless the community that has so blessed and accepted us. We truly feel loved by those surrounding us. The Bible talks about how the Israelites in captivity were to seek the good of the country in which they were now living, and while we're not in captivity - we chose to come here - I think it still applies. This was a small way to do it.

And now I know more names, more faces. I got to enjoy the wonder of children watching something delicious come together. I got helped by some sweet grandmas with the cleanup (and realized how messy I am when I bake with no sink close by!). And my neighbor sent me more pictures posted on their social media site, saying there were many likes, people were planning to make their first cakes, and that "They decided you as very skillful and considerate and capable." I'm praying that it's not just that they see me, but that the love of Christ shines through me.

Thank you, Lord, for this opportunity.

Feiji

This remote control airplane prompted Hadassah's first Chinese word: Feiji. She was so interested in it, and I told her both the Chinese and American word, and she picked the one easiest to say. ;) It was so cute to hear her yell "Feiji" and try to run towards it, signing "please" and not able to understand why it wasn't coming to her!

And yes, that is blue sky. The weather here has been gorgeous lately! We think that maybe they "ordered" no pollution for the week-long national holiday. ;) In any case, it's likely due to the fact that factories may be shut down for the holiday. Whatever it is, we are loving it!

Our neighbors invited us to go with them to a part of campus we'd never been to before. Of course, the children want to play with things that wouldn't really interest adults - but such fun to see their wonder! Hadassah's starting to follow the little boy around some and try to do what he does. So cute!

Wide open grass! A somewhat rare site in Shanghai. ;) We're already making plans to come back sometime soon with a frisbee!

Hadassah sat her for a long time, just playing with grass and leaves and rocks. The things she'd get to play with if we had a back yard... but I'm glad she had this opportunity!
